Olympic Essay
The ancient Olympics are much different then what we know today as the Winter Olympics. There are fifteen sporting events played today in the Modern Winter Olympics. The Ancient Olympics did not have winter sporting events because they were played in warm climates. The Modern Winter Olympics were formed because all the countries could participate in winter sports.
First, the Ancient Olympics were a source of entertainment for the Greeks. The first Olympics were in 776 B.C. That’s more than two thousand years ago. They were held in Olympia, Greece. There were large stadiums (http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/articles/sports/winter_olympics_first1.htm). Representatives from each city would compete in the games. All of them spoke Greek(http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_countries_competed_in_the_Ancient_Olympic_games). These games are not the same as the ones today.
`Second, traditional winter events were added to the Olympics to give athletes from different countries with colder climates an opportunity to compete against each other. The first Winter Olympic Games were in 1924. They were a success. The first games were held in Chamonix, France. France was a great host. (Quick Facts: The Winter Olympics). The events that were included in the first Olympics were four man bobsled, biathlon, curling, figure skating, hockey, cross country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined skiing and speed skating. There are five more events today (http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/articles/sports/winter_olympics_first1.htm). Overall, the Olympic Games are much different then what they were before.
In conclusion, the Greeks would not have been able to play winter games because the dry weather would not allow them too. Also, the winter games were formed because every nation could participate in Winter events.
